I came to America in 1956 on a student visa.
By 1965 I lived in Chicago and worked for the State of Illinois.
I applied for citizenship
The swearing-in ceremony was full of tears of joy
for the 200 of us who became Americans that day.
(I didn't understand the racist reputation of the DAR at that time, so felt honored to be awarded the medal for 'leadership'. The main thing was the wonderful feeling of being part of a country that offered such opportunities.)
