Fifty-four years ago I wrote the text for a little book called:
Seattle Images - in Words and Photographs.
(which featured line drawings and pictures of gulls by Don Aylard)
“the high
cloud-lost
crying of the
gulls ~
carelessly cutting
the blue
backdrop”
"the curving arc
of a gull
soaring into
the sweep of sky
loving the space,
free . . ."
Now, these years later, I'm still fascinated with seabirds ~
At home in California our home is called Heron's Way
and this morning on our island here in the Pacific Northwest
I caught a solitary blue heron meditating in the mist
Our ever-present gull, so curious and engaging
cries imperiously if anyone goes near his food!
This morning our gull is calm
serenely grooming his feathers
Until the King of birds, a bald eagle, arrived on the low-tide beach
causing consternation
amongst the lowly gulls and bufflehead ducks who fled
in a vast rush of wild wings!
